Optional Quick Start straight from the New Game Menu using Start Game Settings.
Optional Quick Start is my go-to mod for alternate starts. It is simple, and more importantly, it respects the game's flow. The biggest disadvantage are the two message boxes at the start, which feel extremely jarring even when you are expecting them. Intuitive Optional Quick Start is an add-on for that mod, which completely isolates the choice to the Start Menu where it belongs to keep your immersion to the MAX.
