📋 About This Mod
DWEMER METALS RETEXTURE SE
" The Dwarves, they disappeared. The whole people, all at once. Leaving behind only their works. "
This mod retextures Dwemer environments, automatons, and clutter. It only affects the metals, not the stone. It is designed to be used alongside Dwemer Armors and Weapons Retexture SE. However, this is not mandatory.
In Vanilla, the dwemer metal meshes are inconsistent. Some meshes do not use cubemap reflections and most of the environments do not use an Environment mask (_M.dds textures). They are set up to use the normal map's alpha for both the specular reflections and cubemap reflections. Specular being at 0. 5 strenght, cubemap reflections at 1. 5. This means that you cannot get strong specular highlights and strong reflections. Environments and clutter also have a white specular, while the armor and automatons have an orange specular. For all these reasons, I have unified all the dwemer mesh shader settings and given every texture its own environment mask. This helps improve reflections and consistency, but means most dwemer environment meshes will need a patch. My base download includes fixes/changes from USSEP, SMIM, and Assorted Mesh fixes. I have also included some more patches in the "Dwemer Metals - Mesh patches" File. A full list of patches will be listed further down. I am also reaching out to authors whose mods would need to be patched but permissions do not allow me to host said patches. I will link external patches in the pinned comment.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
My goal for this retexture was to make Dwarven metals look almost magical, but not quite. I want Dwarven metals to seem like it barely got damaged over time, to give the impression that it is an extremely well made material. However, it is not 100% perfect, so you will see a little wear and tear and some dirt/dust. I wanted this metal to sit somewhere between gold and copper. I also wanted it to be very shiny.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION - CUBEMAPS
This mod was designed to work with the vanilla version bronze_e.dds. Many other dwemer environments retexture overwrite this cubemap with its own. I highly recommend uninstalling any of those. Any upsaled cubemaps mods or cubemap replacers that aim to keep the vanilla cubemap colors will work fine. I personally use Quality cubemaps - HD Cube maps.
For ENB users: please do not use Dynamic cubemaps, or at least do not overwrite bronze_e.dds with the 1 pixel black dot required to activa
