📋 About This Mod

Description

Dragonborn’s Cohort removes a vanilla engine limitation that forces followers into a distance-ranked queue.

Skyrim adds increasingly large extra spacing to every companion behind the one ahead, creating the long single-file “conga line.” Cohort compresses only this accumulated queue spacing, allowing followers to stay together around the player without changing their personal follow distance.

Installation instructions

Install with a mod manager, or place the DLL into Data/SKSE/Plugins/.

Here's what Dragonborn's Cohort does NOT do:

- No fixed formation slots, no KeepOffset targets, no invisible markers dragging companions around

- Doesn't override movement, doesn't teleport anyone, doesn't touch movement speed

- Doesn't change personal follow distance, doesn't override your follower framework's settings - only compresses the extra queue spacing vanilla Skyrim tacks on when other followers are ahead in line

- Doesn't touch AI packages, pathfinding, navmesh, combat behavior, dialogue scenes, or sandboxing

- Doesn't fix genuine movement stalls, blocked doors, broken navmesh, or scene interruptions, that's a different problem entirely (Keep Up! territory, not this one)

What's new in v 1. 1. 0:

- Summoned creatures get pulled into the group now too. Atronachs, reanimated undead and other commanded actors join the ring around you instead. Dismissing or dispelling them returns everything to normal automatically. Summons belonging to other characters aren't affected.

- The heartbeat log line now splits its counter: "capped=N (cmd=M)", where cmd is the number of compression events applied to your summons/reanimated (0 when none are active). One glance at the log confirms the feature is working.

- Improved conflict detection: if another mod is hooking the same engine call sites, the log now names the actual conflicting plugin instead of a vague error. It also catches mods that re-hook these sites later during startup. Nothing changes in how the mod behaves here, just clearer info in the log.

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

Dragonborn's Cohort is a lightweight SKSE plugin that removes the vanilla distance-ranked queue spacing between followers, letting them cluster naturally around the player instead of forming a conga line. It doesn't alter personal follow distance, movement, or AI, and v1.1.0 adds support for summoned creatures. Ideal for players annoyed by the single-file follower train.

✨ Key Features

Compresses the extra queue spacing vanilla Skyrim adds to followers, eliminating the conga line effect
Does not change personal follow distance, movement speed, AI packages, pathfinding, or combat behavior
v1.1.0 pulls summoned creatures (atronachs, reanimated undead) into the group, with automatic reset on dismiss
Heartbeat log line now shows compression event counts for summons (capped=N, cmd=M)
No fixed formation slots, no teleporting, no invisible markers—just queue spacing compression

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Community-approved with 342 endorsements and 8,610 downloads—clearly fills a real annoyance
  • Lightweight and non-invasive: doesn't touch AI, movement, or follower frameworks, so it plays nice with most setups
  • Actively maintained (last updated July 2026) and the v1.1.0 update adds summon support, showing the author cares

⚠️ Cons

  • Requires SKSE and a mod manager or manual DLL placement—not for console or pure vanilla players
  • Doesn't fix actual movement stalls or blocked doors; you'll still need Keep Up for those issues, so it's not a one-stop fix
  • Potential compatibility risk with other mods that alter follower spacing or use formation systems, though it claims not to override them
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim players who are tired of their followers trailing in a long line and want them to cluster naturally around the player. It's perfect for those who use multiple followers and want a more immersive, tight-knit group without heavy formation mods. Skip if you're on console or don't use SKSE—this won't work for you.
📦 Install:Easy· Under 1 minute

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Install with a mod manager like Vortex or MO2 to keep track of the DLL, or manually drop it into Data/SKSE/Plugins/.
  • Pair it with 'Keep Up - Follower Locomotion Fix' to handle actual movement stalls—this mod only fixes the queue spacing, not pathfinding issues.
  • Check the heartbeat log (if enabled) to verify the compression is working; the 'capped=N (cmd=M)' line shows how many events are applied.
