ok, now on to the mod...
WHAT?
Less Annoying Merchants replaces most of the various vendors' long, repetitive lines that you're sick to death of hearing, such as "Some may call this junk - I call them treasures!" and "Oh, so you're an alchemist, then?", with shorter and snappier ones like "Take a look".
WHY?
There is already a mod on the Nexus that does this: Merchants only reply with take a look by BaconCat, which I happily used myself for a long time. Unfortunately, that mod has issues, and the author is no longer active on the Nexus.
BaconCat made his mod by modifying attributes in the Creation Kit (to force certain dialogue options to point to different voice files) and packaging these modifications into an .esp file. That was arguably the smart and elegant way to make this mod, but it also has the potential to conflict with other mods that edit the same records, such as the USKP. Several users have reported that it prevents certain thieves' guild vendors from working properly.
So, I've redone the mod, using a cruder, but much safer, method...
HOW?
I've dug up all of the actual vanilla sound files, and replaced the annoying ones with duplicates of the less annoying ones. So, the game still thinks that it's berating you with "Trinkets, odds and ends; that sort of thing", but actually the 'trinkets...' file has been changed to a duplicate of the 'take a look' file.
That makes this mod very light-weight and risk-free. There are no .esps, no scripts, and no realistic potential for conflict with other mods. It uses 100% vanilla assets, and you can install/uninstall at any time without affecting your save.
However, there's one catch to using this method. The files I've replaced are . FUZ files, which contain both the audio and the lip-sync information (so yes, the lip-syncing will still be correct - though you won't ever have time to really see it, since NPCs in Skyrim freeze once you enter a barter menu). But the . FUZ files don't contain subtitle information. That means that if you have subtitles enabled, you'll still see the old subtitles (eg. you'll hear "take a look", but the subtitle might still say "Spells and incantations for those with the talent to cast them").

Less Annoying Merchants replaces the verbose, repetitive vendor lines in Skyrim with short, concise responses like "take a look," cutting down on dialogue spam. It's a quality-of-life mod for players tired of hearing the same long phrases from every merchant. With 1,420 endorsements and over 107k downloads, it's a proven community favorite.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community-approved with 1,420 endorsements and over 107k downloads
- Simple, effective fix for a common annoyance—no more hearing the same long spiel from every merchant
- Lightweight and likely compatible with most setups since it just edits dialogue
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated in 2014—may not be compatible with the latest Skyrim versions or DLCs without patches
- Only affects vendor lines; if you wanted more immersive dialogue, this won't add anything new
- No detailed documentation or install instructions provided by the author
For Skyrim players who are tired of merchants repeating the same long, flowery lines every time they open a shop. If you want a quick, no-fuss fix to make trading less chatty, this is for you. Skip if you're looking for expanded dialogue or new merchant interactions—this only shortens existing lines.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since it's a dialogue mod, place it in your load order after any mods that alter merchant dialogue to ensure it takes effect.
- If you're using a mod manager like Vortex or MO2, just download and install—no special setup needed.
- Check if the mod requires compatibility patches for DLCs like Dawnguard or Dragonborn, as it was last updated in 2014.
