Description:
==================
This mod replaces the gray paint-like mess that is splattered on top of many rocks and mountains of Solstheim. This paint-like stuff is supposed to be ash that has slowly accumulated into the cracks and on the surfaces of rocks and mountains, due to the Red Mountain volcanic eruption(s) and the terrible windy ash storms that are frequent. The main problem with the vanilla dynamic ash material is that ... it looks aweful! it looks like paint! and it breaks immersion. End of story. The mod replaces all of this material with an HD and HQ ash texture.

Ash Rocks Texture Size Comparison
(NOTE: there is little difference in the center of images, but more pronounced on the left side - this is an example of where the added resolution can help)
Ash Rocks replaces the default gray shader ash on Solstheim's rocks and mountains with high-quality textures, themed after SparrowPrince's Moss Rocks mod. It targets the southern portion of the island, improving visual fidelity for Dragonborn DLC players. With 3,512 endorsements and 85,454 downloads, it's a popular environmental overhaul.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community favorite with 3,512 endorsements and 85k downloads
- Fixes the ugly gray paint that ruins Solstheim's look
- Simple texture replacer—no gameplay changes, just better visuals
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated in 2013—may have compatibility issues with newer Skyrim versions or mods
- Only affects southern Solstheim, so northern areas remain unchanged
- No screenshots or detailed install instructions in the description
For Skyrim players who love Solstheim but hate the flat gray ash textures. If you're doing a Dragonborn playthrough and want a quick visual upgrade without touching gameplay, this is for you. Skip if you want more comprehensive Solstheim overhauls or if you're on a modlist that already changes those textures.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since it's a texture replacer, just drop the files into your Data folder or use a mod manager—no load order worries.
- If you use other Solstheim texture mods, check for conflicts and let Ash Rocks overwrite or be overwritten based on your preference.
- Make sure you have the Dragonborn DLC installed, as the mod only affects its content.
