As of 2022, the C57 Class is still being used in active service on tourist railroads and is sometimes introduced in the media with the nickname "Kifujin", and within local railfan communities, "Shigo Nana". Initially designed as an improvement to the JNR C55 class, with Hideo Shima's help, it was decided to be made an entirely new class, as more and more improvements were made in it's design. In total, there were 201 locomotives made, and 36 preserved.
