The Federal Protective Service (FPS) is a federal law enforcement agency within the U. S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Its primary mission is to protect federal buildings, critical infrastructure, and the people who work in or visit them across the United States. FPS has jurisdiction over 8,500 federal facilities nationwide, including courthouses, office buildings, and leased properties. Personnel: Approximately 900 sworn law enforcement officers, with oversight of over 13,000 contract security officers. Responsibilities: Conducts security assessments, emergency response, criminal investigations, threat mitigation, and coordinates with federal, state, and local agencies. Special operations units include K-9 explosive detection teams, Hazmat coordinators, Rapid Protection Force, and Threat Management Branch.
