Brief Lore

Lakewood & Atlantic System emerged in 1967 after a merger‑by‑absorption, when Lakewood Railroad finally ran out of patience with the Atlantic Coast Line’s trackage‑rights games and sluggish interchange practices. After years of disputes and operational friction, LRR chose the most direct solution available: buy out the problem and fold ACL’s territory into its own system. Long before the merger, LRR was a timber‑country hauler to its core—logs, pulpwood, mill products, and the machinery that kept the forests moving. That identity didn’t fade; if anything, the merger sharpened it. But absorbing ACL brought new business that mattered: grain elevators, ag‑supply customers, and a set of piggyback terminals that opened the door to early TOFC service. What had been a rugged, woods‑born regional carrier suddenly had a broader traffic base, cleaner interchange paths, and a foothold in the growing world of trailer‑on‑flatcar operations. By the early 1970s, the newly unified Lakewood & Atlantic System (LAS) had settled into its role: a no‑nonsense, timber‑bred railroad with a wider reach, stronger connections, and a reputation for doing what its predecessors couldn’t—keep freight moving without theatrics.
