And now for some history on the sole surviving H-5.

Great Northern 1355

Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia in 1909 as Great Northern E-14 No. 1020, this 4-6-0 began her career hauling passenger trains across the Great Northern Railway.

In 1924, No. 1020 was rebuilt at the Dale Street Shops in St. Paul into an H-5 class 4-6-2 Pacific. The extensive reconstruction included a lengthened frame, enlarged firebox, Elesco Type A superheater, and trailing truck. Renumbered 1494 after rebuilding, she became No. 1355 in 1926.

Converted from coal to oil firing in 1929, No. 1355 spent much of her career on the Great Northern's Butte Division, hauling such notable trains as the Oriental Limited, Empire Builder, Winnipeg Limited, Cascadian, Gopher, and Fast Mail. She later moved to local and ore service before being retired from active service in 1954.

In 1955, No. 1355 was donated to the city of Sioux City, Iowa, where she became a memorial to the railroad workers who helped build the city and the nation. After decades on outdoor display, preservation efforts began in the 1980s, eventually leading to her relocation to the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District.

• Today, Great Northern 1355 remains in Sioux City, where volunteers continue the long-term effort to preserve and restore this remarkable survivor of the steam era.
