Yes, Davenport actually built locomotives like this! Mostly as 0-4-0 and 0-6-0s. None survive (to my knowledge) but the concept is essentially a rod locomotive with the power of a geared one without sacrificing speed (the more common single speed version could do about 30 MPH while having 1. 5-2x the tractive effort of a conventional locomotive of the same size)

This is based on a drawing found in the November 1923 edition of The Timberman for a two-speed, oil-burning gear drive 2-6-2. Since railroader does not support oil burning, I took some creative liberties and made it a coal burner. It has 29,500 lbf of tractive effort in low gear, and would have 14,750 lbf in high gear. Due to game limitations, it is locked in low gear for maximum tractive effort, with a top speed of 20 MPH.
