Armies sought to harness and weaponize fire with many forms but few were as feared as the portable flamethrower. History shows that these types of weapons were deployed as early as 672 AD by the Byzantine Empire in the form of hand-pumped siphons which spewed the infamously revered concoction, Greek Fire. After the fall of the Byzantines, flame-projecting weapons were a mostly dormant weapon until the beginning of the 20th century.
