Oblivion Unending

It's been months since you journeyed to Cyrodiil. Months since the guards surprised you at the border and carried you by horse cart, blindfolded, to this prison. You barely caught sight of the white-gold tower while peaking out of the carriage upon your arrival, before they adjusted your blindfold. They said nothing within earshot of you, yet they didn't mistreat you. They wanted you to know nothing about where you were or where you were going, yet they did not kill you. Nothing makes sense here. How did they know you were coming? How did they know where to find you?

The cell they put you in must be the deepest, darkest pit in the entire province. You feel as if you have been here forever. Perhaps you have been here forever, and the other life you lived was only a dream you had in this place. But then, there are dreams you aren't sure you had, and then there are the nightmares you know you have had... and they come every night. A burning gate to a place you could never imagine on your own, and it calls to you. It knows your name. It beckons you somehow with black marble spikes in the shape of a specific daedric rune. It promises power through destruction. Then another, more comforting voice can be heard, clearly opposed to the first. You can never remember what that one says, but somehow you know it wants only that you resist a little longer, and it comforts you. You know not from which daedra or aedra these abominable visions are sent but one thing seems to be clear - someone wants you right here, and right now, until the right time comes.

Then there is the dunmer in the cell across from yours who you sometimes wish you could push into Oblivion itself. He always seems to know just what to say to irritate you and when to do it more effectively than any other creature you've ever known. Your body has grown soft and weak in this place... but you could still teach him a lesson or two. All you know for sure is that when you finally get out of here, and whatever you choose to become in the heart of the empire, the fate of Cyrodiil, no... Nirn itself... will somehow be dependent on you. Is that vanity? Is that hubris? A voice inside that seems to be not entirely your own calms you and says "It is fate, and it is also your choice".

You hear the door at the top of the passage being unlocked, opening. There is the sound of battle and swords clashing. The distinct sounds of summoning magic. Could it be time to leave this place, finally?
