📋 About This Mod

Adds an encounter in which victims of theft may send underworld enforcers after the player.

This mod adds an encounter inspired by Skyrim. When you steal an item there is a chance that its owner will send underworld enforcers after you. Like in Skyrim, this can happen even if you stole the item while undetected. The underworld enforcer boss carries a contract that contains information about which item you stole, from where you stole it, and the identity of the client who sent the enforcers after you. Not all the information is available each time, but the contract tries to be as descriptive as possible. Moreover, the mod comes with an INI that allows for some configuration.

Things to note

Many cells in Oblivion are owned by a faction instead of a specific NPC. In such cases, the contract will list the faction as the client. However, most factions use internal names that were never supposed to be seen in-game. As such, this mod painstakingly renames most of them so that they make sense on the contract. For example, "Henantier's Faction" becomes "Henantier." This is accomplished through a partially dynamic script, which should also cover some factions added by mods.

There are a few caveats with this mod. First, for the sake of performance, only two enforcers are dispatched at a time, unlike Skyrim's three. Similarly, only one group of enforcers can be active at a time, so you will not get swarmed. Second, the enforcers have few restrictions regarding where they are allowed to hunt you, so in most cases they will find you, and they will (try to) kill you. Third, enforcers are sometimes unable to keep up with their boss. As such, if they are too far away, they will be teleported to their boss when the boss initiates dialogue with you. Last, even in death, NPCs are able to send enforcers after you. This is because their ownership of their items is not removed on death. I decided not to implement a death check to prevent this, as it would only be a half measure. For example, the NPC listed as the client is in many cases technically a faction, and you cannot really check if a faction is dead.

Consider this mod a work in progress, more so than my others. The process of having to rename most of the game's factions was incredibly tedious and hampered my motivation to continue developing this mod. It has been sitting idly on my computer for months until I recently and reluctantly began working on it again to prepare it for release. Nevertheless, while I am certain there are edge cases I have yet to address, the mod is highly functional.

Compatibility

This mod should be compatible with almost all other mods. Ones that make drastic changes to Faregyl Inn, The Sleeping Mare, The Choosy Beggar, or Sickly Bernice's Taphouse may conflict, but I doubt it. The mod is fully compatible with Loot Menu.
