📋 About This Mod
I Can't Believe It's Not Vanilla!
The features You want... Without the fluff You don't!
This is the cleanest, most Vanilla-Esque 'Default Spell Remover' ever!
THE definitive Default Spell Removing Mod!
An original unused Bethesda icon has been reenabled in-game!
History behind the Crystal Ball icon:
This original Bethesda icon is unused in the released game, but it can be seen during Todd Howard's Oblivion E3 Presentation.
During the E3 footage, the crystal ball icon is used as a generic/default magic icon regardless of what spell is currently selected.
This icon actually can be seen in game but that is a rare occurrence.
Usually upon seeing this icon it would mean you don't have a Magic Effect currently selected,
and you would therefore crash soon after. This happened to me over and over while making this mod.
The Crystal Ball icon probably goes unused in the released game for these possible reasons:
1) It could have been a placeholder before finishing the spell group icons.
2) It might not have been a placeholder.
It could have been the devs' original intention, but later removed due to change in development direction.
We don't know if the devs ever intended for this icon to be in the final game.
We don't know if the devs ever had the idea to make a new character start with no spells,
and perhaps use this icon when no spell is selected.
3) After choosing to display spell group icons on the HUD and giving every player "Heal Minor Wounds"
as the default spell with no way to deselect it, the crystal ball icon doesn't really fit into the game at all.
This mod brings back the crystal ball icon to be used as the icon for having 'No Spell' selected or for the 'Script Effect' Magic Effect.
I think it really fits in well for this purpose! The crystal ball implies mystery / possibility / variety and is also related to magic/mysticism.
Who knows what spell/effect you'll choose next!
█══ You will no longer start the game with the spells "Heal Minor Wounds" and "Flare."
In the basic version, this is all that was done.
☛ After using a scroll, your current spell will default to "No Spell."
☛ "No Spell" can be hotkeyed.
☛ Races and Birth Signs that start with spells other than the default spells will still have them.
☛ Classes / Characters with high magical skills will still have their specific starting spells.
* If you don't want to start the game with any spells besides race and birth sign spells, install the basic version along with 'No Starter Spells'
█══ Additional Spell Changes Version:
This mod removes the two default starting spells in Skyrim, replacing them with an original Bethesda icon that has been re-enabled in-game. It's a small immersion-focused tweak for players who want a fresh start without the usual magic. With 68 endorsements and recent updates, it's a niche but functional choice.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Does exactly what it says—no more free spells cluttering your magic menu.
- Recent update (March 2025) means it's likely compatible with current Skyrim versions.
- Solid download-to-endorsement ratio (16k downloads) shows it's being used.
⚠️ Cons
- Only 68 endorsements—small community, so less feedback and testing.
- Removing starting spells might break quests or tutorials that expect them.
For Skyrim players who want a true fresh start without the default Flames and Healing spells, especially roleplayers or challenge seekers. If you're a completionist or prefer vanilla convenience, skip this—it's purely a removal mod with no added content.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since it's a simple mod, just drop the files into your Data folder or use a mod manager—no complex setup.
- Test early in the game to see if the missing spells affect the tutorial quest—if so, you may need to console-command them back.
- Check if your other mods add starting spells—this mod only removes the defaults, so conflicts could arise.
