Now I watched a documentary on the making of Oblivion and in it was a realistic brown horse, so god only knows how we ended up with these purple things.
This here mod is a simple alternative to installing completely new models, for people who like the vanilla style, or anyone using Kuzja80's 4x Textures (Vanilla Remastered) mod which is quite frankly as good as it gets for Oblivion. These textures are part of the performance version of his mod I made but I just updated it to include all horses, so I think with the amount of work involved it deserves its own mod page. I'm fairly certain this is the only mod that improves vanilla textures of all the horses in the game.
The main aim was to make these beasts look as realistic as possible so the biggest difference you will notice is the colour of them, as ever, best just to look at the screenshots to see if you think its an improvement or not. In the process I spotted more and more texture seams which have all been blended away, very rough stuff around their bum holes and at the point where their front legs join the body. A small but incredibly important step was to change all the eyes, before they looked lifeless in my opinion so new eyes with lashes give them some soul. Apart from some minor mesh problems (not my department) I'm happy with how they all look now. Every single horse texture is included, armour, saddles, brown, blue, and glowing red eyes. No textures in this pack exceed 1k resolution apart from the normal map in the 2k version which was made by Kartoffels. Pixelation is only slightly noticeable on the black horse but that option will fix it, vanilla one is also pretty good. Screenshots were taken using Vanilla Remastered 1k, Natural Atmospheric Oblivion, and just driver forced 2x AA and 16x AF.
