📋 About This Mod

Mercantile Experience Fix

Requirements:

Oblivion Script Extender

Description

Vanilla Mercantile experience is broken. You’re meant to gain experience for every item you sell, but it actually only records every transaction, e.g. selling a stack of 100 arrows counts as only 1 item sold.

This mod straight up fixes the vanilla functionality in the simplest scripted way possible—nothing more, nothing less. Other mods exist that do this, but they either add superfluous options and features, or could just be scripted simpler. This mod is just the vanilla system, fixed.

Although... with the above said, I have also optionally made it so that buying items also counts as a skill use. I consider this a fix, as buying spells in vanilla does increase your Mercantile, whereas buying items doesn't. I presume the developers at one point intended that both types of transactions should increase your skill. Either that, or experience when buying spells was only included because you can't sell spells. However, I believe this makes logical sense too, as Mercantile represents your skill in buying and selling items, not just selling.

How it Works

A simple script runs during barter and checks whether your current gold has changed. As soon as it does, the script retrieves your last transaction and logs additional uses of the Mercantile skill according to the quantity, using the vanilla experience gain system. That’s as simple as it can get. No extra features, no overhauls, no dumb workarounds.

Installation

This mod requires the Oblivion Script Extender.

Standard installation procedure: add the file to your data folder and check in the game launcher or your mod manager of choice.

Uninstallation

Compatibility

This mod's changes are applied through a single script. It should be compatible with everything. Don't use with another mod which also does the same thing, which includes Enhanced Economy.

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since it's a simple fix, just drop the files into your Data folder and enable the esp in your mod manager or Oblivion launcher.
  • If you use a mod manager like Wrye Bash or OBMM, install it through that to keep your load order clean.
  • Check if you have other mods that alter Mercantile—this fix might conflict if they change the same values.
