📋 About This Mod
This shader replaces the older Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO) shader making it incompatible with Vanilla Plus Ambient Occlusion (VPAO) the performance impact of both running and the fact you’d have double ambient occlusion would be insane. However, if you do want more stable and high-quality ambient occlusion go download VPAO.
Screen-Space Indirect Lighting (SSIL) is a real-time shading technique that approximates global illumination using information already available in screen space: the depth buffer, the normal buffer, and the rendered color buffer. Making it perfect for standard gameplay without drastically changing performance and for beautiful high-quality screenshots.

Indirect lighting estimates how much light from other surfaces bounces onto the shaded point.
This color bleeding is created by sampling nearby shaded surfaces and re-projecting their colors.
Ambient Occlusion -
Occlusion measures how much nearby geometry blocks ambient light from reaching a point.
This shading is generated from comparing depth samples and checking for geometry.
These are settings that do not need changed as often and are set within the shader as a static variable. You can set them to TESR_DebugVar to adjust them on the fly in game and change it back to your desired variable afterwards to make quality presets.
USE_TEXTURED_NORMALS -
Textured normals add fidelity and increase quality at a pretty heavy cost to performance. Bias needs flipped unless your using the ultra preset.
SSIL_SAMPLE_COUNT -
Sample count increases fidelity and quality of the sampling at a heavy cost to performance.
SSIL_BLUR_RADIUS -
Blur radius increases the strength and size of the blur applied to the SSIL.
SSIL_BLUR_THRESHOLD -
Blur threshold increases the amount of blur allowed around edges.
SSAO_THICKNESS -
Controls how much depth difference counts as occlusion.
SSIL_SAMPLE_POWER -
Controls how samples are distributed within the radius.

This mod replaces NVR's old ambient occlusion with a modern screen space indirect lighting technique, improving lighting realism. With 98 endorsements and 17,034 downloads, it's a niche but popular choice for NVR users seeking better visuals. Last updated May 2026.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Solid download-to-endorsement ratio (17k downloads, 98 endorsements) — people are grabbing it.
- Simple concept: swap out old AO for modern SSIL, exactly what NVR users want.
- Recently updated (May 2026), so it's likely compatible with current NVR versions.
⚠️ Cons
- Only 98 endorsements — not a huge community stamp of approval yet.
- Requires NVR shader to work — if you don't have NVR, this is useless.
For NVR users who want better indirect lighting without hunting through settings. If you're into realistic lighting and already run NVR, this is a no-brainer. Skip if you don't use NVR or prefer vanilla AO.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Make sure you have NVR installed and updated before adding this mod.
- Test in a scene with strong indirect light (like a sunset) to see the difference.
- If you notice performance drops, check if your GPU handles SSIL well — it can be heavier than AO.
