📋 About This Mod
Update: Thank you all for the support - I'm very glad so many people have enjoyed this mod! If you'd like an ESPless version of this mod, the appropriately-named Merchants Wear Civvies - ESPless has been created by the wonderful Kazzy.
It annoyed me that the Mojave's travelling merchants all dressed alike - and all in black and white, too! It was neither realistic nor decorous. This mod gives them a range of civilian outfits - clothes they wouldn't be ashamed to be seen in while selling their goods at a market, but hard-wearing enough for the roads. They also wear hats and scarves to keep the sun off, and occasionally even wear glasses.
Their weapon selection has also been tweaked; they'll now spawn with one of a range of basic pistols or rifles, of the kind they might reasonably be expected to keep at home for defence or keeping critters out of the garden. They won't be incapable in a fight, but they'll leave the automatic weapons to their mercenary caravan guards.
Shout out to Meowshley aka spacemarine42's Merchants of the Wastes - Diverse Gear for Traveling Merchants, which inspired this mod!
Merchants Wear Civvies replaces the default leather armor and stormchaser hats of Traveling Merchants with a variety of civilian clothes and matching weapons. This cosmetic overhaul adds visual variety to NPCs without changing gameplay. With 48 endorsements and nearly 94k downloads, it's a niche but popular choice for players seeking more immersive merchant appearances.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Tiny mod with a solid following (48 endorsements) and massive download count (93,671) — clearly a lot of people want merchants to ditch that armor.
- Simple concept, well-executed: just swaps outfits and weapons, so it's easy to understand what you're getting.
- Adds visual variety to a game where every merchant looks identical — nice for immersion.
⚠️ Cons
- Only affects Traveling Merchants — if you were hoping for town guards or other NPCs to get the civvies treatment, you're out of luck.
- No screenshots or detailed description provided, so you can't see the actual outfits before installing.
- Last updated March 2025 — might not be compatible with future game patches, though it's likely fine for now.
For players who are tired of seeing every Traveling Merchant in the same leather armor and hat and want a bit of visual variety in their world. It's a pure cosmetic mod, so skip it if you're looking for gameplay changes or new mechanics.
💡 Beginner Tips
- This is a simple file drop — just place the mod files in your game's mod folder and activate it in the mod manager.
- Since it's cosmetic, it won't affect your save game, so you can install or remove it anytime without worrying about breaking anything.
- If you're using other mods that change merchant outfits, check for conflicts — load order might matter.
