📋 About This Mod
It saves right before you use a door that changes areas. Yep, before. How many crashes will this spare you lost progress from?
Okay, but why?
Here's the situation. You're out in the wastes, and you haven't hit quicksave in a while. Sure, you have LStewieAl's mod setup to autosave every 10 minutes with cycling autosaves, but it's about nine minutes and you just got to a door. Annnd the game crashed. Damn, I just lost nine minutes of my life. That sucks.
(Well, for a lot of people, I imagine that they don't even have autosaves happening that often.)
Sure you get an autosave after loading into a new cell, but that doesn't really help if the game crashes before loading, or mid-load. But what if an autosave happened just before going through the door? ...tadaa, I guess? That's what this does.
Will this mess up my game?
Fair question. Nope. It's just a tiny script that runs only when you use a door that changes areas.
Hang on! What if it does? Is there a reason this shouldn't be done?
I... don't know. I mean, I can't see one. I've done a lot of testing with this and it's saved my butt from lost progress countless times so far. I think I've had at least eight crashes due to load doors since I made this, and every time I was thankful that I did. So maybe there's some reason why I shouldn't be doing this, but functionally in my time spent testing I can't find any.
So why wasn't this made before?
The mystic magicks of the PreActivate event handler provided by ShowOff didn't exist until quite recently. I'd imagine that's why. And maybe people aren't torturing their New Vegas into instability with naughtiness like the WIP New Vegas Reloaded as much as I am.
Isn't a crash save the same thing?
Nah. A crash save happens when the game crashes, and it tries its best to create a save. A part of the reason I made this is that I've had weirdly corrupted crash saves. This saves before the door is even activated, so the chances that the save would be corrupt are pretty much nil, so you'll be able to pick up from just before the game crashed (so long as it was a load door that crashed you).
Cool, what else do I need?
Just xNVSE and ShowOff. It won't work otherwise, I put a gotcha in there to make sure of that.
Okay, but why GetCrosshairRef?? Why is it written this way?
It's nice being able to make sure that the player's looking at a door when the script does its thing, peace of mind for me. Plus something something avoids scripted activators maybe.
There are reasons to set this up the way I did, I've been playing the game with this script and tinkering with it since I launched it on the Nexus, and to catch all potential issues? This is hands-down the best way to do it. I think this must be why it's how popular mods do it, despite the advice on the wiki.
