Armor Damage Fix

Description

The way that the game calculates damage to armor includes numerous inconsistencies due to the New Vegas devs bolting the DT system onto the exisitng DR system from Fallout 3. None of the equations have been fully documented (until now) and the information provided by some previous mods and on the Wikis is also incorrect. For the avoidance of doubt, I have profiled the equations and provided them below.

Gamesettings:

fDamageToArmorPercentage (default = 0. 35)

fMaxArmorRating (default = 85)

fMinDamMultiplier (default = 0. 2)

MinDam = fMinDamMultiplier AttDam

PercDR = min(DR, fMaxArmorRating) / 100

CalcDam = (AttDam - DT) (1 - PercDR)

HealthDam = max(MinDam, CalcDam)

CondDam = fDamageToArmorPercentage ( min(HealthDam, DT (1 - PercDR)) + MinDam PercDR )

Damage is only applied to items worn on the hit limb, which excludes a number of slots used for the head.

There are several problems with this system:

[]The damage to your armor is based on your total DT and DR, including any effects from aid items and perks. For example, this means that taking Med-X will increase the damage your armour receives.

[]Similar to the above, blocking with a weapon can significantly increase the damage that your armor takes. This is because the block is treated as additional damage threshold, which is factored into the calculation.

[]Only the armor on the body location that is hit will be damaged, despite the calculations for health and condition damage including contributions from all armor.

[]Some armor slots never receive condition damage, which includes glasses, some hats, and backpacks. This is because the game only seems to damage items in the "UpperBody" and "Hair" slots. This leads to inconsistencies, especially with hats, as some use the Hair slot and some don't.

[]Having DR will slightly increase the condition damage that your armor takes from low-damage hits despite not decreasing damage. However, it will significantly decrease the damage it takes from hits greater than DT (1 - PercDR).

[]The equation for armor damage is not consistent with the formula for health damage. Neglecting the minimum damage setting for now, you would expect it to be fDamageToArmorPercentage ( DT (1 - DR) + AttDam * DR ). However, since fMinDamMultiplier is not present in the second term of this equat

This bug fix mod addresses vanilla issues that cause armor to degrade faster when under the effect of Damage Threshold or Damage Resistance perks or aid items. It also enables damage for armor slots that are never hit in vanilla. A small but practical fix for Fallout 4 players.

✨ Key Features

Fixes vanilla bugs causing armor to degrade quicker under DT or DR perks or aid items.
Enables damage for armor slots that can never be hit in vanilla.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Targets a real annoyance for survival players who hate armor breaking too fast.
  • ESPless design means no plugin slot used, cleaner load order.
  • Solid community trust with 173 endorsements and nearly 12k downloads.

⚠️ Cons

  • Niche fix—if you don't use DT/DR perks or aid items, this won't matter to you.
  • Last updated in April 2026—may not be tested with the latest game patches.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Fallout 4 players who rely on Damage Threshold or Damage Resistance perks and hate seeing their armor degrade faster than it should. Also for those who want more realistic armor damage across all slots. Skip if you play on lower difficulties where armor degradation isn't a big deal.

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since it's ESPless, just drop the file into your Data folder or use a mod manager—no plugin order worries.
  • If you use other armor overhaul mods, test early to see if they conflict with this fix.
  • Check the mod page for any updates or patches if you're on the latest game version.
