Compatibility Note.

If you're wondering whether this mod works with the current game version — it most likely does. Originally developed for v7. 15, the mod remains fully functional in v7. 17 without any changes, and I expect it to remain compatible with future updates. I am active on Nexus and regularly monitor my comment sections. Rest assured, if a mod becomes broken or obsolete, I hide it immediately. If it's still public, it's stable and ready to use.

What this mod does

This mod makes steering nonlinear for gamepads.

What is nonlinearity (in simple terms)

Nonlinearity changes the way input is processed in the game, making the relationship between the movement of the gamepad stick and the movement of the steering wheel dynamic — small movements of the stick can result in a smaller or larger turn of the wheels, depending on the current position of the stick.

• []Linear input: move the stick 25% → wheels turn 25%; move the stick 75% → wheels turn 75%

  []Nonlinear input: move the stick  at 25% → wheels turn ~10%; move the stick at 75% → wheels turn ~60–70%

Nonlinearity makes steering smoother when the stick is moved slightly from its original position, reducing jerkiness and making it easier to make small adjustments to the trajectory, but at the same time making it more responsive when the stick is moved more further away from the center.

Just like in real life, when you are driving on the highway and want to change lanes, you don't make wide, sharp turns with the steering wheel, but only turn it slightly and smoothly. But when you need to make a sharp turn, you turn the steering wheel faster and more carelessly.

With linear control on a gamepad, it is not possible to control the steering wheel as precisely because the stick has a much smaller range of movement. This is why nonlinearity is needed; in a sense, it mimics this behavior.

Available versions

Highway — Ideal for calm, long trips. Maximum smoothness at small angles ensures comfort when sharp movements are not required, while large stick deflections ensure the fastest possible steering response, which is helpful in emergency situations and when parking.

Sport — tuned for fast driving, drifting, and racing. The slight contrast between the sharpness of the steering wheel at low and high steering angles keeps high steering precision while remaining smoother than linear steering without mod.

Universal — The golden middle if you drive both heavy trucks/buses and light/sports cars. Moderate smoothness at small angles, optimal response at larger deflections.

When this mod was fully created, packaged, and ready for upload to Nexus, I was shown on the official game server that this feature already exists in the game. However, even knowing where it is, it took me some time to find the additional settings window, because it's not obvious (at least to me) place. So I still decided to publish this mod here — maybe more people will find out about this feature.
