📋 About This Mod

Features:

  • []Backwards compatible with Map and Compass for MWSE

[]Double-click on the map to bring up the note prompt

[]Click and hold notes to drag them. Press Confirm to save

[]Configurable keybind to bring up a large view of the map, anytime, even when in another menu. Handy for writing map notes from dialogue

[]Configure which installed maps should be visible, or what their names should be, via the in-game menu settings

    []Localization ready

How to disable the minimap on the HUD:

If you want a greater challenge by disabling the vanilla compass, here's how to do that with this mod:

  • []Make sure Wayfarer's Atlas is currently set not to disable the vanilla map.

[]Go into the inventory. See the vanilla map and pin it (click on the button at the very right of the top of the window).

[]The minimap found on the HUD should now be disabled, but because the vanilla map is now pinned, it replaces it on the HUD.

[]Go into Wayfarer's Atlas settings to now disable the vanilla map.

[]Either type "reloadlua" into the console and press enter, or restart the game.

[]Both the vanilla map and the minimap on the HUD should now be disabled. Have fun getting lost!

    Adding new maps:

To create a new map pack, you currently have to write one for Map and Compass. Therefore, instructions for creating Map and Compass map packs applies to this mod as well.

    • []Place map packs under Data Files/MWSE/mods/Map and Compass.

[]All map packs are a folder with a maps.lua file. Check out the included "Example Map Pack" for a template to adapt.

[]Map image must either be DDS or TGA.

[]Map image width and height must be powers of 2 (256x512, 2048x1024, etc). Since few maps perfectly fit this, you need to round up to the nearest power of 2 and fill the remaining space with total transparency.

This is easy in Paint. NET: Image -> Canvas Size -> Set width and height to nearest power of 2. This will fill the remaining space with transparency and align the real image to the top left. Save.[]Link up your map image(s) in the maps.lua file in your map pack. Set the real width and height of the image before padding with transparency.

      Recommended mods:

      • []The original Map and Compass, as this contains some useful map packs.

[]Map Replacements for Maps and Compass Wagner Style - Brujoloco Edition, to make some built-in Map and Compass map packs look more weathered and realistic. Highly recommended.

[]The Gridmap Pack for Map and Compass - Brujoloco Edition, for more map variety that also covers Tamriel Rebuilt areas and provinces.

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

Wayfarer's Atlas is a UI mod for OpenMW that replaces the default map with real maps, adds a visual quest journal, and lets you mark areas of interest. It encourages navigation by sight and getting lost for immersion. With 33 endorsements and 833 downloads, it's a niche but appreciated addition for players seeking a more challenging and immersive experience.

✨ Key Features

Replaces the in-game map with real maps for enhanced immersion.
Adds a visual journal to track quests and mark areas of interest.
Encourages navigation by sight and sense of direction, making getting lost part of the fun.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Turns the map into a real-world navigation challenge—perfect for immersion junkies.
  • Visual quest journal adds a personal touch to tracking your adventures.
  • Active development (last updated Jan 2026) shows the author is still supporting it.

⚠️ Cons

  • Low endorsement count (33) means it's not widely tested—expect potential rough edges.
  • Real maps might be confusing if you're used to the vanilla minimap—getting lost is the point, but it's not for everyone.
🎯 Is This For You?
For OpenMW players who crave deep immersion and don't mind ditching the convenience of a GPS-style map. If you enjoy roleplaying as an explorer who reads landmarks and keeps a personal journal, this is your mod. Skip it if you prefer fast travel and always knowing exactly where you are.
📦 Install:Medium· 5-10 minutes

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Make sure you're running OpenMW, not the original Morrowind engine—this mod won't work on vanilla.
  • Start a new playthrough to fully appreciate the journal and map mechanics without old saves cluttering things.
  • Use the mark feature to tag important locations like dungeons or quest givers—it'll save you from wandering too far off track.
