📋 About This Mod
Talking Matters Remastered
Speechcraft Overhaul for both OpenMW and MWSE
This is an expansion and rewrite of the original Talking Matters made by sofiaaq. This version expands on their original concept somewhat, with the addition of context based answers and messages (only for if you are friends or not currently), extended tweakability, a rebalancing, and many bug fixes where there was a risk for warnings, crashes, or unintended behaviors.
A great shoutout to sofiaaq for all the great ideas and for the foundation of the code. I hope I have been able to make the mod justice with the work I have added to it
Description & Features
Talking Matters Remastered is a set of modules (each one can be turned on and off as you please) aimed at making talking to NPCs more immersive and interesting, and to make Speechcraft both a more important and fun to use skill, and a less frustrating one to train and use through a play through.
The mod is highly tweakable, but provides a basic (fairly forgiving in my opinion) balancing.
1. Charisma to hold someone's attention - Limited topics (per day)
Each time you enter a dialogue with someone, you will have a limited set of topics you can ask about before they grow tired of you and ask you to leave them alone. Force yourself on them more than so, and they will start to dislike you.
The amount of topics is reset each day, and the amount you get is determined by your speechcraft level, how talkative they are (based on both their speechcraft level and their class), the NPCs disposition, if you belong to the same faction, if you are colleagues (have the same class), your fatigue level, and if they consider you a friend or not. There is ample feedback on when a character don't want to talk to you any longer.
Whenever an NPC has something interesting to say (a journal entry), or something that might require an answer (a dialogue choice), the mod won't count down your topics, but might instead even add a few extra as the NPC clearly has something they want to say to you.
2. NPCs take offense - A limit on how many failed persuasions are allowed (per day)
NPCs can take offense from your insistent attempts of persuasion. After a (tweakable) amount of failed attempts at persuasion, they will be offended, and refuse to talk to you and refuse you services for the rest of the day. Successful persuasion on the other hand gives you more topics that you can
Talking Matters Remastered is a complete overhaul of Speechcraft for Morrowind, compatible with both OpenMW and MWSE. It makes the skill system-driven and roleplay-friendly, where your speechcraft determines how much NPCs want to talk with you. With 59 endorsements and 2,264 downloads, it's a niche but appreciated mod for immersive players.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Works with both OpenMW and MWSE, so you can use it no matter which engine you play on.
- Ties your Speechcraft skill directly to NPC willingness to talk, making the skill actually matter in conversations.
- Decent traction for a niche mod: 59 endorsements and over 2,200 downloads show it's got a following.
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated in August 2026, but no mention of compatibility with the latest Morrowind patches or modding tools.
- Only 59 endorsements means it's not widely tested; you might hit bugs or conflicts that haven't been reported.
For Morrowind players who want Speechcraft to feel meaningful and immersive, especially roleplayers who enjoy system-driven interactions. If you're tired of Speechcraft being a useless skill and want it to affect NPC behavior, this is for you. Skip if you prefer vanilla mechanics or want a mod with extensive documentation.
💡 Beginner Tips
- If you're using OpenMW, make sure you're on a recent version that supports mods like this; check the OpenMW modding guide for proper installation.
- For MWSE users, ensure you have the latest MWSE build and use a mod manager like Wrye Mash or MO2 to keep track of your load order.
- Since the mod overhauls Speechcraft, test it early in a save to see how it affects your playstyle before committing to a long playthrough.
