📋 About This Mod

I failed to realize that Morrowind Code Patch already does this with its "Confiscated Item Fix", because the ownership indicator (also from MCP) is still displayed. So you can use this mod if you want it to disappear, or for the faction inheritance feature.

A quick and dirty MWSE mod that does just one thing: When an NPC is killed (or disabled), all of his/her items lose ownership, or, if they were in a faction, ownership is transferred to this faction. So, if you want someone's house and the stuff in it, you can get it (if you can get rid of the owner).

I might add an MCM later but for now, if you don't want the ownership transferred to their faction, you must edit the main.lua directly with a text editor and change "factionInheritance" from "true" to "false" at the beginning of the file. Also, if you don't want disabled NPCs to be included, change "includeDisabled" from "true" to "false".

Recommended: Morrowind Code Patch Ownership Tooltip (in "Interface Changes"). Also, with "Confiscated Item Fix" (in Bug Fixes), this mod's functionality is effectively already enabled, with items of dead NPCs losing ownership when they are picked up, however, the tooltip will still show them as "Owned" until then.

Requirements

This mod uses MWSE-Lua, so you need MGE XE with the latest version of MWSE. Make sure you run MWSE-Update.exe.

Known issues

With the mod MyManor.esp - Purchase Hlaalo Manor, you can use the house without buying it if you are a kinsman (or higher rank) of House Hlaalu. Still, the faction ownership is removed from everything when you buy it, so the mod still works as intended. Of course, with this mod, you can use ANY house without buying it, as long as the owners are dead.

Even though in Morrowind there is no option for an object to start in a disabled state, it's possible that an NPC gets disabled by a script before the player first meets them, and enabled again later. If this NPC also owns items, these will lose ownership, and don't regain it when the NPC is enabled (but only if you actually look at them while the NPC is disabled, as that's when the mod removes it). I don't know if there are any such NPCs in vanilla Morrowind.

Installation

As a pure MWSE-Lua mod, it has no plugin file. Just copy the MWSE folder into your "Data Files" folder or use a mod manager to install.

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

This Morrowind mod makes items lose ownership when their owner dies or is disabled, so you can loot freely without stealing. It's a small, focused immersion tweak with 37 endorsements and 522 downloads, last updated in July 2025.

✨ Key Features

Items lose ownership if their owner is dead or disabled.
Designed for immersion, removing the need to steal from corpses.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Tiny mod that solves a real annoyance—no more accidental theft from dead bodies.
  • Active development (updated July 2025) and a niche following (37 endorsements).
  • Simple concept, likely easy to install and forget about.

⚠️ Cons

  • Very niche—only affects ownership on death, so if you don't care about that, it's pointless.
  • Low endorsement count (37) means it's not widely tested—might have hidden quirks.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Morrowind players who hate the 'stealing from corpses' mechanic and want a more realistic looting experience. Skip if you're fine with the vanilla system or want bigger gameplay overhauls.

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Make sure you have MWSE (Morrowind Script Extender) installed, as the mod name suggests it's required.
  • If you use a mod manager like Wrye Mash or MO2, install it there to keep your Data Files clean.
  • Test on a save where you kill a NPC with a unique item to see the effect immediately.
