📋 About This Mod

This mod is a widget on the HUD which displays your current location. By default the text fades just as the text above the minimap in vanilla does, and is meant to replace it entirely.

Low effort mod that I made because I was tired of the cell name blocking where I like to put Timehud or the Sun's Dusk UI

- easily move the widget by clicking and dragging, lock in place

- change color using a full color picker with presets

- left, center, or right text alignment

- choose different fade options or disable fade entirely

- multiple date format options including weekday, day, month, year, and combinations of them

- font size can be changed in the settings, alternatively you can click and use the mouse wheel to change the size as well

- click and shift+mousewheel to adjust background opacity in-game

- adjust border thickness, color and padding

- pure lua, no .omwaddon or .esp required

- lightweight, can be safely installed and removed at any time and placed anywhere in any load order

- localizations for 13 languages: English, German, French, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Portuguese, Romanian, Japanese, and Chinese. Changing the localization requires a restart for the settings menu to update into your chosen language, sorry if the translations aren't great I just used google translate

- Better Bars compatibility - place this mod below Better Bars and choose the correct openmw_hud.layout file

requirements

- OpenMW 0. 49+

installation

1. Enable the .omwscripts like you would any other

2. To remove the existing Cell text that's displayed above the minimap, read on.

3. If using Better Bars, find the /mygui/ file in this mod which matches your Better Bars setup. If you can't remember which one you're using, or if you have other mods which customize the openmw_hud.layout file, you will need to edit that particular file manually. Here's how:

Find the "Cell name display when changing cells" block. It should look something like this.

<!-- Cell name display when cell changes -->

<Widget type="TextBox" skin="SandText" position="0 89 288 24" name="CellName" align="Left Bottom HStretch">

<Property key="Visible" value="false"/>

<Property key="TextAlign" value="Right"/>

<Property key="TextShadow" value="true"/>

<Property key="TextShadowColour" value="0 0 0

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

LocationHUD is a lightweight Lua mod that replaces the text displayed above the minimap when entering a new cell. It offers a simple UI tweak for players who want a different look for location announcements. With 14 endorsements and recent updates, it's a niche but maintained option.

✨ Key Features

Replaces the default location text above the minimap with a Lua-based alternative.
Lightweight modification focused solely on UI text appearance.
Recently updated (July 2026), indicating active maintenance.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Simple and focused – does exactly what it says without bloat.
  • Recent update (July 2026) means it's likely compatible with current game versions.
  • Easy to install – just drop the Lua file in place.

⚠️ Cons

  • Very low endorsement count (14) – not widely tested by the community.
  • No screenshots or detailed description – you're flying blind on what it looks like.
  • Only affects the text above the minimap – if you wanted more UI customization, this isn't it.
🎯 Is This For You?
For players who find the default location text ugly or intrusive and want a simple swap. If you're into UI tweaks and don't mind experimenting with a less popular mod, this could be a neat change. Skip if you're looking for major UI overhauls or if you prefer well-established mods with lots of feedback.
📦 Install:Easy· Under 1 minute

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since it's a Lua replacement, make sure you place the file in the correct directory (likely your game's Lua scripts folder) – check the mod's file structure after download.
  • If the text doesn't change, verify that no other UI mods are overriding the same element – conflicts can cause the default text to remain.
  • Test in a new cell (like entering a building) to see the effect immediately – you don't need to restart the game if the mod loads dynamically.
