📋 About This Mod
Held Light Boost increases
Held Light Boost increases the radius of player-held lights in OpenMW while preserving the original item’s model, icon, color, value, weight, and remaining burn time.
It is meant to make torches, lanterns, and other carried lights more useful without changing how they look or turning them into new items in practice.
Features
- Boosts equipped player-held light radius by a 1 to 10 multiplier (defaulted to 3).
- Works with ANY hand-held light source.
Technical Details
Held Light Boost works by generating boosted versions of carriable light records at content load time. When the player equips a normal held light, the mod temporarily equips a matching boosted copy with the same model, icon, color, value, weight, and burn condition.
The original light is removed while the boosted copy is held, then restored if the player unequips it before it burns out, adjusting the remaining time to match. If the boosted copy burns out, the original is not restored.
Requirements
- OpenMW 0. 51. 0+
Installation
1. Copy the Held Light Boost folder into an OpenMW data directory location.
2. Add that folder as a data directory in the OpenMW Launcher.
3. Enable Held Light Boost.omwscripts in your content list.
4. Optional: launch the game and adjust the range multiplier under Options > Scripts > Held Light Boost.
Compatibility
Held Light Boost generates boosted versions of carriable light records at content load time. It should work with mod-added held lights when their records are visible to OpenMW and use normal light records.
Only equipped player-held lights are affected. Placed lights, sconces, braziers, campfires, markers, and other non-carriable light records are ignored.
Brighter Torches Lua (OpenMW) by Silrorj inspired the safer replacement lifecycle used here: remove the original item while the boosted copy exists, then restore it if needed.
Held Light Boost is a Lua-only OpenMW mod that increases the radius of player-held lights without altering their models, icons, colors, values, weights, or burn times. It is configurable and works with mod-added light records. With 13 endorsements and 700 downloads, it's a niche utility for players wanting better illumination.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Does exactly what it says: bigger light radius without messing with other light properties
- Lua-only means no messy file overwrites—clean install and uninstall
- Configurable, so you can dial in the perfect glow for your playstyle
⚠️ Cons
- Tiny community footprint (13 endorsements) — you're an early adopter, so expect minimal troubleshooting help
- Only affects player-held lights, not static or magic lights — if you wanted a global lighting overhaul, this isn't it
- Last updated July 2026 — likely fine for current OpenMW, but no guarantee for future versions
For OpenMW players who find torches and lanterns too dim to see by. If you're tired of squinting in dungeons and want a simple, configurable boost to your carried light radius, this is for you. Skip if you want overhauled lighting effects or changes to light visuals.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Place the Lua script in your OpenMW 'overrides' folder or use the mod manager to install it—no need to touch your game files directly.
- Test the radius setting in a dark cave first; you can adjust the value in the config file without reinstalling.
- Since it's Lua-only, make sure your OpenMW build supports Lua scripting (0.47+).
