📋 About This Mod
I was never happy with how my fonts rendered in-game.
I've tried a few different options, and even though OpenMW technically supports TTF fonts, I found the way they rendered was still too blurry for my tastes. After some experimenting, I decided the best option was to continue to use the .fnt format, and replace it with a custom 1024x1024 (4x vanilla resolution) font.
So instead, here's a brand-new ultra HD super crisp font.
I've also included the same font at 512x512 (for HD screens) and 256x256 (vanilla resolution, for small screens).
Some users have reported issues related to non-OpenMW installations (letters getting cut off).
I've created a version specifically for non-OpenMW users that should resolve this.
How to install?
- OpenMW users: After installing the files (either MO2 or Data Directories), edit your openmw.cfg file and add the following line:
fallback=Fonts_Font_0,balmora
If you are running on regular HD resolutions (1920 x 1080 or lower) or use a smaller Interface -> GUI scaling factor (<1. 5) or Font Size you can instead try the medium font resolution if you are unhappy with the downsampling on with a smaller font size or UI scale:
fallback=Fonts_Font_0,balmora_md
And for smaller screens, GUI scaling factors, or Font Size there is a small font resolution (Vanilla resolution):
fallback=Fonts_Font_0,balmora_sm
- Non-OpenMW users: Just install the files to your Data Files folder as with any other mod. Mod manager (MO2, Vortex, etc) recommended.
If you are unhappy with the UHD resolution (bad pixel sampling when downsized on some screens) you can:
Editing your Morrowind.ini and change the following line:
Font 0=balmora
Regular HD:
Font 0=balmora_md
Vanilla resolution:
Font 0=balmora_sm

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community-trusted with 75 endorsements and over 1,600 downloads.
- Actively maintained—last updated August 2025, so it's current.
- Works across both OpenMW and original Morrowind, so you're covered either way.
⚠️ Cons
- Only 75 endorsements—it's a niche mod, so don't expect a huge community behind it.
- No screenshots or detailed previews in the description, so you'll have to try it to see if you like the look.
- Font replacements are purely cosmetic—if you're after UI overhauls or gameplay tweaks, this won't add much.
For Morrowind players who find the default font hard to read and want a cleaner, more legible UI without changing the game's feel. Also great for OpenMW users who want a modern font that scales well on high-res screens. Skip if you're happy with the vanilla font or want more than a text swap.
💡 Beginner Tips
- If you're using OpenMW, just drop the font files into your OpenMW data directory—no need to touch the original Morrowind installation.
- For the original engine, back up your original font files before replacing them, so you can revert if you don't like the new look.
- Check the mod's readme or forum thread for any specific installation steps, since the description is sparse.
