For developers
Or if a lantern from a mod that you are using is not animated and you want to fix it yourself - see detailed information of how to make this mod animate a modded lantern (or any object that needs to swing in the wind really) - see GitHub Page (it only requires a fairly simple text file edit).
This OpenMW mod procedurally animates lanterns and guild signs to swing in the wind, with adjustable swing strength and easy extension to support modded objects. It is optimized for virtually zero performance impact, making it a lightweight visual enhancement for Morrowind players using OpenMW.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Tiny performance hit—virtually zero, so it won't tank your frame rate even on older rigs.
- Adjustable swing strength means you can dial in the wind effect to your taste.
- Easy to extend to modded objects, so it plays nice with other mods that add lanterns or signs.
⚠️ Cons
- Only 81 endorsements—it's a niche mod, so you might be on your own if issues pop up.
- Requires OpenMW—if you're on the original Morrowind engine, this won't work for you.
- No explicit documentation on how to extend it to modded objects, so you'll need to dig into the files if you want to add support.
For Morrowind players using OpenMW who want a bit of life in the world without a performance hit. If you're a modder looking to add wind effects to your own objects, this is a solid base. Skip if you're on the original engine or prefer static environments.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Make sure you're running OpenMW, not the original Morrowind engine—this mod won't work otherwise.
- After installing, check the in-game settings to adjust swing strength to your liking.
- If you have mods that add lanterns or signs, test them in-game to see if they're animated; if not, you may need to extend the mod's configuration.
