Tachi(太刀) have been worn by samurai of the status that they can ride horses after the 14th century.
Meanwhile, the shield of Japan(楯) was held by low-ranked samurai and it was enlarged so that archers could be hidden behind it. There were also small shields(手楯), but many were not used.
