Berthier M16 Carbine

"Bolt-Action Carbine" "A compact French carbine that faithfully served through two world wars." Berthier M16 Carbine The Berthier M16 Carbine is a French bolt-action military carbine developed from the Berthier rifle system as a compact firearm for cavalry, artillery crews, and support troops. The weapon features a manually operated rotating bolt, combining rugged construction, dependable performance, and ease of handling in a compact package. Notable features include: — 8×50mmR Lebel chambering — manually operated rotating bolt-action — fixed 5-round internal magazine loaded with an en-bloc clip — shortened barrel and lightweight configuration — full-length wooden stock — bayonet mounting capability The defining improvement of the M16 variant was its increased magazine capacity, expanding from three to five rounds while retaining the simplicity of the original Berthier design. Its shorter overall length made the carbine especially suitable for mounted troops, artillery crews, and soldiers operating in confined spaces. Historical Background The Berthier system was introduced in the late nineteenth century as a more compact alternative to the Lebel rifle. Early carbines featured a three-round en-bloc magazine and were primarily issued to cavalry and artillery personnel. Combat experience during the First World War highlighted the need for greater ammunition capacity. In 1916, the Berthier M16 was introduced with a redesigned five-round magazine and several minor mechanical improvements. The Berthier M16 Carbine served extensively with the French Army during the closing years of the First World War and continued to see service throughout the Second World War and in French colonial forces. Although eventually replaced by more modern rifles, the Berthier M16 remained valued for its reliability, durability, and straightforward design.
