FN M16A4 The FN M16A4 is a licensed-production American service rifle manufactured by FN Herstal for the United States Armed Forces. As one of the final standard members of the M16 family, it combines the proven M16 operating system with modern modular capabilities. The rifle operates using the Direct Impingement gas system with a rotating bolt, delivering excellent accuracy, manageable recoil, and dependable battlefield performance. Notable features include: — 5. 56×45mm NATO chambering — Direct Impingement gas-operated action — rotating bolt locking system — semi-automatic and three-round burst fire modes — 20-inch barrel for high muzzle velocity and long-range effectiveness — Picatinny top rail with detachable carrying handle — compatibility with the M203 grenade launcher and other standard military accessories The defining feature of the M16A4 is its flat-top upper receiver with a detachable carrying handle, allowing the easy installation of optical sights, red-dot optics, and other mission-specific equipment. Its full-length barrel provides outstanding accuracy and effective range, making it one of the most capable variants of the M16 platform. Historical Background In the late 1990s, the United States Marine Corps sought to modernize the M16A2 by introducing a modular rifle better suited for modern optics and battlefield accessories. The result was the M16A4, officially adopted in the early 2000s. One of its principal manufacturers was FN Herstal, which produced the rifle under license for the U. S. military alongside other defense contractors. The FN M16A4 saw extensive service with the U. S. Marine Corps and other American forces during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although many frontline units have transitioned to the M4A1 carbine, the M16A4 remains in service where its longer barrel and superior long-range performance continue to offer tactical advantages.
