CAR-15

"Carbine / Assault Rifle Family" "The compact ancestor of the modern M4 carbine." CAR-15 The CAR-15 is a family of American carbines and rifles developed by Colt from the AR-15 platform for military, special operations, and law enforcement use. The weapon operates using the Direct Impingement gas system with a rotating bolt, offering excellent accuracy, lightweight construction, and superb handling. Notable features include: — 5. 56×45mm NATO chambering (. 223 Remington on some civilian variants) — Direct Impingement gas-operated action — rotating bolt locking system — telescoping collapsible stock on most variants — lightweight aluminum receiver with polymer furniture — compatibility with standard M16 magazines Its compact dimensions made the CAR-15 particularly well suited for vehicle crews, airborne troops, reconnaissance units, and special operations forces requiring a lightweight and highly maneuverable firearm. The combination of low weight, high rate of fire, and excellent ergonomics established the CAR-15 as one of the most recognizable members of the AR-family. Historical Background In the mid-1960s, Colt introduced the CAR-15 (Colt Automatic Rifle-15 Military Weapons System), a family of compact firearms that included carbines, rifles, survival weapons, submachine gun-style variants, and light support weapons. The best-known members of the family were the Colt Model 607, XM177E1, and XM177E2, which saw extensive service during the Vietnam War with U. S. Special Forces, MACV-SOG, helicopter crews, and other specialized military units. The compact design proved highly effective in jungle warfare and close-quarters combat, although the shortened barrel produced increased muzzle blast and flash. To mitigate these effects, several variants featured the distinctive long moderator. Operational experience with the CAR-15 directly influenced the development of later American carbines, ultimately leading to the Colt M4, one of the world's most widely used military carb
