Berdan II The Berdan II is a single-shot bolt-action military rifle designed by American firearms inventor Hiram Berdan and adopted by the Russian Empire in 1870. The rifle features a manually operated rotating bolt, offering excellent reliability, solid accuracy, and an efficient operating mechanism for its era. Notable features include: — 10. 75×58mmR Berdan chambering — manually operated rotating bolt-action — single-shot configuration — internal striker housed within the bolt — long barrel for improved accuracy — bayonet mounting capability Compared to earlier percussion and needle-fire rifles, the Berdan II provided a much stronger action, simpler operation, and the advantages of metallic centerfire ammunition. Although lacking a magazine, it was considered one of the most advanced single-shot military rifles of the late nineteenth century. Historical Background Following the adoption of the Berdan No. 1, the Russian military continued refining its new service rifle. The result was the Berdan II, featuring a redesigned rotating bolt that simplified manufacturing, maintenance, and field operation while improving overall reliability. Beginning in the 1870s, the Berdan II became the principal service rifle of the Imperial Russian Army and saw extensive combat during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, where it earned a reputation for accuracy and dependability. By the end of the nineteenth century, it was gradually replaced by the magazine-fed Mosin Model 1891, though many Berdan II rifles remained in reserve service, military training, and civilian use for years afterward.
