Historical Background In 1886, France became the first nation to adopt a military rifle chambered for a smokeless-powder cartridge, introducing the Fusil Modèle 1886 and the revolutionary 8×50mmR Lebel cartridge. Operational experience led to a significant modernization in 1893, resulting in the M93 variant, which featured a strengthened bolt, improved safety mechanisms, and several refinements that enhanced durability and reliability. The rifle served extensively during the First World War, where it proved accurate and dependable despite its slower-loading tubular magazine compared to contemporary box-fed rifles. Even after the introduction of more modern rifles such as the Berthier series, the Lebel remained in French service for many years, particularly with reserve and second-line units.
