StG-940

"Assault Rifle" "An East German Kalashnikov built for the global market." Wieger StG-940 The Wieger StG-940 is a prototype assault rifle developed in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) by VEB Geräte- und Werkzeugbau Wiesa (Wieger) and chambered for the 5. 56×45mm NATO cartridge. The rifle operates using a long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt, combining the proven Kalashnikov operating mechanism with compatibility for the NATO intermediate cartridge. Notable features include: — 5. 56×45mm NATO chambering — long-stroke gas-operated action — rotating bolt locking system — stamped steel receiver — 30-round detachable box magazine — design derived from the Kalashnikov platform Built around the proven AK operating system, the StG-940 offered excellent reliability, ease of maintenance, and dependable performance under adverse conditions. Its design was intended primarily for export customers using the 5. 56×45mm NATO cartridge. Historical Background During the early 1980s, VEB Geräte- und Werkzeugbau Wiesa, commonly known as Wieger, began developing a family of assault rifles chambered in 5. 56×45mm NATO. The project was aimed at export markets, as many potential customers had standardized on the NATO cartridge rather than the Warsaw Pact's 5. 45×39mm round. The rifle family included several variants, with the StG-940 serving as the standard rifle model based on the well-established Kalashnikov operating system. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, the program was discontinued before entering military service with the National People's Army of East Germany. Although never officially adopted, the Wieger StG-940 remains an interesting example of East German firearms engineering developed specifically for the international market.
