Walther P38(S)

"Semi-Automatic Pistol" "The pistol that ushered in a new era of military sidearms." Walther P38 The Walther P38 is a German semi-automatic pistol developed by Carl Walther GmbH for military, police, and service use. The pistol operates using a short-recoil action with a locking block system, delivering excellent reliability and accuracy. One of its most innovative features was its double-action/single-action trigger mechanism, allowing the pistol to be safely carried with a round chambered. Notable features include: — 9×19mm Parabellum chambering — short-recoil operation — locking block system — double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger — manual safety with decocking function — 8-round single-stack magazine The Walther P38 combined ease of handling, reliability, and a manufacturing process that was significantly simpler than that of the Luger P08. Its advanced mechanical design made it one of the most forward-thinking military pistols of its era. Historical Background During the mid-1930s, Carl Walther GmbH began developing a new military sidearm to replace the Luger P08, which was expensive and complex to manufacture. Following extensive trials, the pistol was officially adopted by the German Wehrmacht in 1938 under the designation P38. Throughout the Second World War, the Walther P38 was produced by several German manufacturers and saw widespread service with the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe, and other German military branches. After the war, the P38's design had a profound influence on future service pistols. Its double-action/single-action trigger system and integrated decocking safety became standard features on many later handgun designs. An updated version, designated the Walther P1, served as the standard sidearm of the Bundeswehr for many years, demonstrating the enduring success of the original design.
