"Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle" "Bolt-action precision. Semi-automatic speed." M110 SASS The M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) is an American semi-automatic sniper rifle developed by Knight's Armament Company (KAC) for precision engagements at medium and long ranges. The rifle operates using a direct impingement gas system with a rotating bolt, combining exceptional accuracy, reliability, and rapid follow-up shot capability. Notable features include: — 7. 62×51mm NATO chambering — direct impingement gas operation — rotating bolt locking system — detachable 10- or 20-round box magazine — free-floating barrel — full-length Picatinny rail with provisions for modern optics and accessories The M110 SASS offers the precision expected of a sniper rifle while providing the faster engagement capability of a semi-automatic platform. Its modular design supports a wide variety of optical sights, night vision devices, bipods, suppressors, and other mission-specific equipment. Historical Background In the early 2000s, the U. S. Army initiated a program to field a new semi-automatic sniper rifle capable of supplementing and eventually replacing the M24 Sniper Weapon System. The winning design came from Knight's Armament Company, based on the proven SR-25 platform. Officially adopted in 2007 as the M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS), the rifle was issued as a complete package that included a precision optic, quick-detach suppressor, bipod, and other mission equipment. The M110 saw extensive service with U. S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other deployments, where its combination of precision and rapid follow-up shots proved highly effective for snipers and designated marksmen. Although gradually supplemented by newer precision rifles, the M110 SASS remains one of the most recognizable semi-automatic sniper rifles of the twenty-first century.
