Notable features include: — 5. 56×45mm NATO chambering — long-stroke gas piston operation — rotating bolt locking system — semi-automatic, three-round burst, and fully automatic fire modes (depending on the variant) — folding metal stock The FN FNC features a simple, rugged design that is easy to maintain and highly resistant to dirt and adverse environments. Historical Background During the mid-1970s, Fabrique Nationale began developing a new assault rifle chambered in 5. 56×45mm NATO to complement and eventually succeed the FN FAL on the international market. Following extensive testing, the rifle was officially adopted by the Belgian Armed Forces in 1979 under the designation FN FNC (Fabrique Nationale Carbine). The rifle was also exported to numerous military and law enforcement organizations, including those of Sweden, Indonesia, and several Middle Eastern nations. Its dependable design served as the basis for several licensed derivatives, most notably Sweden's Ak 5 service rifle. Although gradually replaced by newer systems in some countries, the FN FNC remains in service with armed forces and security agencies around the world.
