Historical Background In the late nineteenth century, renowned American firearms designer John Moses Browning began developing a new generation of self-loading pistols. His work resulted in the Colt M1900, introduced by Colt in 1900. It became Colt's first production semi-automatic pistol and one of the earliest firearms to employ the short-recoil operating system that would later become the standard for countless modern handguns. The Colt M1900 underwent U. S. military trials and strongly influenced Browning's later designs, including the Colt Model 1902, Model 1905, and ultimately the legendary Colt M1911. Although its production life was relatively short, the Colt M1900 occupies a pivotal place in firearms history as the pistol that launched Colt's era of self-loading handguns.
