Historical Background In 1847, Texas Ranger Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker worked alongside firearms designer Samuel Colt to create a new revolver for cavalry and frontier service. Their goal was to combine the rapid-fire capability of a revolver with enough power to effectively stop both enemy soldiers and horses. The resulting Colt Walker was adopted by the U. S. Army during the Mexican–American War. Only about 1,100 military revolvers were manufactured, making original Colt Walkers among the rarest and most valuable Colt firearms today. Despite its brief production run, the Colt Walker profoundly influenced later Colt revolvers, serving as the direct predecessor to the famous Dragoon series.
