T20 Rifle

"Automatic Rifle" "The Garand that learned full-auto." T20 Rifle The T20 Rifle is an American experimental automatic rifle developed from the M1 Garand in an effort to increase infantry firepower during World War II. The weapon retained the powerful . 30-06 Springfield cartridge and reliable gas-operated Garand action while adding selective-fire capability and a detachable box magazine. Key features include: — . 30-06 Springfield chambering — semi-automatic and fully automatic fire modes — detachable 20-round box magazine — gas-operated action — greatly increased firepower Compared to the standard M1 Garand, the T20 provided a much higher volume of fire and reduced the need for frequent reloading. However, the powerful full-size rifle cartridge made automatic fire difficult to control, especially when fired unsupported. Historical Background In 1944, the U. S. Army sought ways to improve infantry firepower without replacing the successful M1 Garand with an entirely new weapon. One solution was the T20 Rifle, a modified Garand featuring a detachable magazine and selective-fire capability. The design incorporated several concepts influenced by the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and other contemporary automatic weapons. Testing demonstrated impressive battlefield potential, but World War II ended before the rifle could enter large-scale production. Although never adopted, the T20 played an important role in the evolution of American military rifles. Many of its concepts directly influenced the development of the M14 rifle, which would later become the standard service rifle of the United States.
