Nambu Type 94

"Semi-Automatic Pistol" "A small pistol for a vast empire." Nambu Type 94 The Nambu Type 94 is a Japanese semi-automatic pistol developed for officers of the Imperial Japanese Army prior to World War II. The pistol operates using a short-recoil system and features a compact design that made it convenient to carry as a personal sidearm. The weapon offers several notable characteristics: — compact construction — 8×22mm Nambu chambering — single-stack detachable magazine — lightweight and easy to carry Despite its practical size, the Type 94 became known for its controversial trigger mechanism and unusual design. Nevertheless, it served extensively with Japanese officers throughout the Pacific War. Historical Background During the early 1930s, the Imperial Japanese Army sought a more compact sidearm for officers and vehicle crews. The project was led by renowned firearms designer Kijirō Nambu, who had already developed several weapons for Japanese military service. In 1934, the pistol was officially adopted as the Type 94, named after the year 2594 in the Japanese imperial calendar. During World War II, the Type 94 was widely carried by: — army officers — armored vehicle crews — pilots — support personnel As wartime conditions worsened, manufacturing standards declined, and many late-war pistols exhibited noticeably rough workmanship. Today, the Nambu Type 94 remains one of the most recognizable Japanese military pistols of the Second World War and is highly valued by collectors.
