Historical Background The SIG MCX Spear was developed in the early 2020s for the U. S. Army's NGSW program. In 2022, SIG Sauer's design was selected as the winner of the competition, leading to military adoption as the XM7, replacing the aging M4 carbine in frontline service. The rifle was created in response to concerns about the effectiveness of traditional intermediate-caliber ammunition against modern body armor and at extended combat ranges. Its introduction marks one of the most significant changes in U. S. military small arms since the adoption of the M16 rifle in the 1960s. Today, the MCX Spear represents the next generation of infantry weapon systems.
