KP m44

"Submachine gun" “Captured design, reborn for a new standard.” KP m/44 The KP m/44 is a Finnish submachine gun derived from the Soviet PPS-43. It represents a post-war adaptation of a captured and proven wartime design. Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, the KP m/44 differs from the original PPS-43, which used 7. 62×25mm Tokarev. The conversion allowed compatibility with Western-standard ammunition. The weapon operates on a simple blowback system with an open bolt, ensuring reliability, ease of maintenance, and low production cost. Like the PPS-43, it features a compact stamped steel construction and a folding stock, making it highly suitable for close-quarters combat and mobile operations. The KP m/44 maintains a high rate of fire and effective performance at short ranges. Historical Background The KP m/44 was developed in Finland after World War II, based on captured PPS-43 submachine guns. Finnish forces recognized the simplicity and effectiveness of the PPS design and adapted it to their own needs, including rechambering it to 9×19mm. This modification aligned the weapon with Finnish logistics and ammunition standards. The KP m/44 illustrates how wartime captured technology influenced post-war weapon development. Although not as iconic as earlier Finnish designs, it remains an important example of practical adaptation and reuse of battlefield-proven weapons.
