.280 FAL

"Battle rifle (prototype)" “The rifle that almost defined the future.” FN FAL (. 280 British) The FN FAL chambered in . 280 British (7×43mm) represents an early prototype configuration of the FN FAL, developed by Fabrique Nationale. Unlike the later standard 7. 62×51mm NATO version, this variant was designed around an intermediate cartridge, offering a balance between controllability and effective range. The rifle operates using a gas-operated system with a tilting bolt, providing reliable function under various conditions. Chambered in . 280 British, the FAL prototype offered reduced recoil, improved automatic fire control, and sufficient range for infantry combat, aligning with early post-WWII concepts of modern rifle design. The weapon features a detachable box magazine and was intended to be capable of both semi-automatic and automatic fire. Historical Background The FN FAL (. 280 British) was developed in the late 1940s–early 1950s during trials to define a new standard infantry rifle and cartridge. The . 280 British cartridge was strongly supported by the United Kingdom as a modern intermediate round. However, the NATO ultimately standardized the more powerful 7. 62×51mm NATO cartridge, largely influenced by U. S. preferences. As a result, the FAL was redesigned for 7. 62×51mm and became one of the most widely used battle rifles in the world. The . 280 FAL remains an important “what-if” in firearms history—representing an early vision of the modern assault rifle concept. If there are any bugs or malfunctions, write in the comments.
