Colt LSW

"Light support weapon (LSW)" “Sustained firepower in a familiar AR form.” Colt LSW The Colt LSW (Light Support Weapon) is a heavy-barrel variant of the M16 rifle family, developed by Colt's Manufacturing Company. It was designed to provide sustained automatic fire within infantry units while maintaining compatibility with standard AR-platform rifles. Chambered in 5. 56×45mm NATO, the Colt LSW operates using the direct impingement gas system, typical of AR-pattern weapons. It features a heavier barrel to handle prolonged firing and improve heat resistance. The weapon is typically equipped with a bipod, allowing for more stable automatic fire in a support role. It uses standard STANAG magazines, ensuring logistical compatibility with other service rifles. Compared to belt-fed machine guns, the Colt LSW is lighter and more maneuverable, though it offers less sustained fire capability. Its design focuses on delivering squad-level suppressive fire while preserving the familiar ergonomics of the M16 platform. Historical Background The Colt LSW was developed in the 1980s by Colt's Manufacturing Company. It was part of efforts to create a magazine-fed light support weapon that could complement or replace heavier machine guns in certain roles. The design built upon the existing M16 rifle platform, making it easier to integrate into units already using AR-based rifles. Although it was tested by various military forces, it was not widely adopted, as belt-fed systems like the M249 light machine gun offered superior sustained fire capability. Today, the Colt LSW remains a niche and relatively rare example of an AR-based support weapon concept. If there are any bugs or malfunctions, write in the comments. I will try to fix them.
