MG 131

"Aircraft heavy machine gun" “Compact firepower for the skies of World War II.” MG 131 The MG 131 is a German heavy machine gun developed during World War II by Rheinmetall-Borsig. Designed primarily for aircraft use, it was chambered in 13×64mmB, a powerful cartridge intended to increase effectiveness against enemy aircraft and lightly armored targets. Despite its relatively large caliber, the MG 131 was notably compact and lightweight for its class. This made it ideal for installation in tight spaces such as fighter aircraft cowling mounts, defensive turrets, and flexible gun positions. The weapon operates using a recoil-operated mechanism and is belt-fed, allowing for sustained automatic fire. Its high rate of fire and compact design made it a valuable upgrade over earlier rifle-caliber aircraft machine guns. The MG 131 was commonly mounted on aircraft such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190, where it was used both for offensive and defensive roles. Historical Background The MG 131 was introduced in the early 1940s as Germany sought to improve the firepower of its aircraft during World War II. Earlier machine guns, such as the MG 17, were chambered in rifle calibers and were becoming less effective against increasingly durable aircraft. The MG 131 addressed this issue by providing a larger caliber while maintaining a compact form factor. It became one of the standard heavy machine guns used by the Luftwaffe and saw extensive use throughout the war. Although eventually surpassed by autocannons like the MG 151, the MG 131 remained an important step in the evolution of aircraft armament.
