"General-purpose machine gun" “Lightweight, reliable, and built for relentless suppressive fire.” PKM machine gun The PKM is a Soviet-designed general-purpose machine gun developed by the legendary firearms engineer Mikhail Kalashnikov. Chambered in 7. 62×54mmR, the PKM is known for its reliability, relatively low weight, and sustained fire capability. The weapon operates using a gas-operated system with a rotating bolt, similar in principle to the AK-47 family. It feeds from non-disintegrating metal belts, making it highly effective for prolonged suppressive fire. One of the key advantages of the PKM is its excellent balance between firepower and portability. Compared to earlier machine guns, it is lighter and more manageable, allowing infantry units to deploy it efficiently in a variety of combat situations. The PKM is typically mounted on a bipod for mobile use, but it can also be used with a tripod for increased stability and sustained fire. Historical Background The PKM machine gun was introduced in 1969 as a modernized version of the earlier PK machine gun. It was developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov to replace older Soviet machine guns such as the SG-43 Goryunov. The PKM featured improvements in weight reduction and manufacturing efficiency, making it more practical for widespread military use. The weapon quickly became one of the standard machine guns of the Soviet Army and was widely exported to allied countries. It has seen extensive use in numerous conflicts around the world. Even today, the PKM remains in active service in many countries and is considered one of the most reliable and effective general-purpose machine guns ever produced.
