HK MG5

"General-purpose machine gun (GPMG)" “Germany’s modern successor to the legendary MG3.” Heckler & Koch MG5 The MG5 is a modern German general-purpose machine gun developed by Heckler & Koch to replace the long-serving MG3 in the German armed forces. Chambered in 7. 62×51mm NATO, the MG5 was designed to provide improved accuracy, controllability, and modularity compared to its predecessor. The weapon operates using a gas-operated rotating bolt system and features a quick-change barrel, adjustable stock, and modern mounting interfaces for optics and accessories. Unlike the MG3, which is based on the wartime MG42 design, the MG5 was engineered from the ground up as a modern platform optimized for contemporary infantry combat. One of the notable features of the MG5 is its adjustable cyclic rate, allowing operators to select different firing speeds depending on the mission. The machine gun is also equipped with modern ergonomics, including improved controls, better recoil management, and compatibility with modern optics. After extensive testing and evaluation, the MG5 was officially adopted by the Bundeswehr in 2013. The weapon entered service in 2015 and gradually began replacing older MG3 machine guns in German infantry units. Designed with modern battlefield requirements in mind, the MG5 offers improved accuracy, reduced recoil, and better integration with modern soldier systems and optics. Today, the MG5 represents Germany’s latest generation general-purpose machine gun and continues the long tradition of German belt-fed machine guns dating back to the legendary MG42.
