Adopted by the British Army in 1953, the L2A3 variant became the standard British submachine gun for several decades. It gained a strong reputation for reliability and improved manufacturing quality compared to the simpler Sten design. The Sterling remained in service until the 1990s, when it was gradually replaced by modern carbines such as the L85A1 from the SA80 family. The weapon also gained pop-culture recognition as the base prop for the iconic blasters used by Imperial stormtroopers in the film Star Wars.
